Long
Term Care Insurance
“Only old people need
this kind of insurance!” is the frequent response when the subject of
long term care is raised to someone in their forties or fifties.
Well, let’s start with a bite of reality. In 1995, 40% of the
people in long term care facilities were between
the ages of 18 and 65.
With an average monthly
cost approaching $5,000.00 this is a totally unexpected and unprepared
financial disaster waiting to happen. (It is important to understand that
health insurance, be it a group medical plan or an individual health plan,
does not normally pay for these expenses.)
A major misconception is
that Medicare pays for Long Term Care for seniors in a facility.
In fact, except for a very narrow period of time, Medicare pays
little or nothing. The
largest payer of long term care hospitalization in California is MediCal—the
State’s poverty plan! In
order for a senior to qualify for this benefit you must prove that you
have spent yourself into poverty!
This expense can
dramatically and disastrously impact a retirement plan.
When one spouse requires care, the other can be reduced to near
poverty. And that is
completely unnecessary!
Long term care insurance
is available and affordable to most people.
But you must be healthy to acquire it.
And now is the time to investigate its benefits and costs.
